How to get an autograph at a sports game?

I am going to the Columbus Crew/LA Galaxy game October 4 in Columbus Ohio. I am a major David Beckham fan. Have tickets 17 rows behind visitor bench. What is the best way to get an autograph? Am I more likely to get one by going early or staying later? Will security let me down before the game to the front row (assuming others haven’t arrived yet)? And what should I take to get autographed? A picture, ball, or jersey?

Advice would be best from someone who has actually gotten an autograph themselves at a sports game. Thanks!
